Waste
by: Elizabeth Monk
I decide I can’t be your friend anymore
in the passenger seat of your car.
You’re in the driver’s seat, sipping iced coffee.
No cream, no sugar, no bullshit; just plain, black coffee.
Black, like my soul,
you say (for the millionth time).
I used to laugh
when you said things like this;
Revelling in our crown-emoji-Instagram-bio
pettiness while sucking on red plastic straws.
We were a recipe for disaster:
One part passive, one part aggressive, all parts
convinced we were special.
We were never anything
other than ordinary.
You tell me how your boyfriend is toxic because he asked you to wash your dishes
but he didn’t put his socks in the hamper and he’s suchafuckinghypocrite.
I would give my two-cents, but I know
where they’ll end up: tails-side-up,
on the ground.
I know you’ll keep leaving
dishes in the sink.
I know he’ll keep leaving
socks on the ground.
And I know our conversations will continue
to be dominated by your
relationship problems.
Our friendship has become a landfill
for your mistakes.
