Ask the Author with Alivia Roehrig
TT: How long have you been writing? What interested you about it?
AR: I’ve written stories for fun since I was six. I liked writing the story I wanted to read. I got to create characters and I knew every plot twist. Having that control over the story was fascinating to me, and it still is.
TT: What inspired you to write this piece(s)?
AR: Summers at my grandmother’s house. I was probably 4 or 5, much younger than June. But I remember bonfires at Grandma’s and cookouts. I have a huge family, and summers are always special because of that. And I wanted to include queerness because it’s a part of life that’s always been around, even in the early 2000’s when this story takes place.
TT: Is this similar or different to other things you’ve written? How so?
AR: Very different! I usually write romance or fantasy. I stay in a genre. This is my first piece of what I would consider literary fiction.
TT: Who is your favorite author or writer? What do you like about their work?
AR: Either VE Schwab. I love the worlds she creates and I love her characters. She writes across multiple ages and each one feels appropriate. My favorite piece by her is A Darker Shade Of Magic as I just adore the world she created and the magic system along with it. Another great novel she wrote is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I think I’ve told all my friends to read it!
