Ask the Author with Ellie Wilson
TT: How long have you been writing? What interested you about it?
EW: I’ve been writing since I was young, probably around 4th grade. I got interested in writing when my mom thought it would be good to have me and my sister write during the summer, as an educational, fun activity. I hated it at first but found love for writing along the way!
TT: What inspired you to write this piece(s)?
EW: My inspiration for this piece was really just a form of journaling. When something’s upsetting me or I’m struggling mentally, I find that writing helps me to release all those feelings and work through them without judgment. I thought this piece was important to share because it’s a raw experience of how mental health affects how we see ourselves and the things around us.
TT: Is this similar or different to other things you’ve written? How so?
EW: It’s similar to my notes app. Like most people, when something is bugging them, jotting it down is extremely helpful. Especially when you want something to be written down quickly and privately, the notes app is super accessible and makes a great companion.
I also have always loved the journalistic form that some authors take in their works; it gives such an intimate experience to the reader.
TT: Who is your favorite author or writer? What do you like about their work?
EW: That’s super hard! I love Virginia Woolf, Sally Rooney, and about a million more. I love Woolf’s work because it’s so incredibly real and still relevant today with women’s inequality and with the struggle of mental health awareness and depth. Sally Rooney is one of my newest favorites. I really enjoy her writing style and her depiction of the modern world through her characters.
