Ask the Author with Leora Eisenberger
TT: How long have you been writing? What interested you about it?
LE: I've been writing since I was in elementary school. The first thing I remember writing was this chapter book about this magical world called Cantata. I wrote it in my journal and then had my grandma type it for me.
I think what I liked about writing was being able to create an entire world that didn't exist before. I'm in control of everything that happens, and I can create people and stories out of nothing. I also like being able to tell stories from the perspective of people like me, and write the representation I always wanted.
TT: What inspired you to write this piece(s)?
LE: This piece started from a nightmare I had about my own family dying in a plane crash. They were on vacation in Arizona, and the night they were traveling back, I dreamt that their plane went down, and they were gone. So, when I woke up, I had this idea in my head, and thought it would be interesting to write about.
TT: Is this similar or different to other things you’ve written? How so?
LE: I'd say this piece is different from what I usually write, just because I don't usually write about awful, traumatic things like this happening. But it's in the genre that I prefer, realistic fiction.
TT: Who is your favorite author or writer? What do you like about their work?
LE: I really like Adam Silvera. I think he has a really powerful way with words, and I haven't read even one of his books that I didn't like. His characters feel so realistic, and I always connect really deeply with them. Plus, almost all of his characters are LGBTQ, which I really love.
