Ask the Author with Nicholas Pattilio
TT: How long have you been writing? What interested you about it?
NP: I have been writing since high school. I liked the idea of being able to tell stories and using language to affect people.
TT: What inspired you to write this piece(s)?
NP: This was written last spring, after a long, tiring COVID semester on campus. I was feeling burnt out, and my energy was depleted. I wanted to capture this feeling of just moving along, acting like nothing was wrong, and showing up even though you feel your commitment and dedication dwindling. I also observed myself being particularly moved by the changing of winter to spring in that year, and incorporated those feelings into this piece as well.
TT: Is this similar or different to other things you’ve written? How so?
NP: I would say similar. I really enjoy writing what I call "stream of consciousness poetry", where the tone is essentially myself unleashing seemingly-random collected thoughts, but finding a way to tie them together.
TT: Who is your favorite author or writer? What do you like about their work?
NP: My favorite poets are Billy Collins and Sharon Olds. I like how their poetry is able to convey a story, but with less words than longer work–they are able to pack a punch within the boundaries that are set in poetry.
