Ask the Author with Georgia Speller
TT: How long have you been writing? What interested you about it?
GS: I've been writing as long as I can remember. I used to write stories on tests instead of essays–I don't know why little me thought that was an option to be honest. I mostly just wrote because I thought it was fun. I got my start in fanfiction and it wasn't until the summer of 2019 that I realized I could make writing my career. I got a piece of fanfiction published in a Zine that summer and holding it in my hands was crazy–I wanted to see more of my work on paper; I wanted to tell even more people my stories with my own characters.
TT: What inspired you to write this piece(s)?
GS: We had to make a game for the writing for a RPG's class and I'm a bit of an overachiever, so I knew I wanted a bunch of pictures and weird coding stuff that wasn't required to mess around with. 01 is one of my newer characters that I really love, and I had a bunch of art for her that I made. So, I figured I would base my story around her and the art I had.
TT: Is this similar or different to other things you’ve written? How so?
GS: Certainly similar in some aspects. My preferred genre is sci-fi fantasy, so I write a lot of it. Most of my writing has cyborgs and other hallmarks of science fiction such as corrupt governmental systems. I think its a fun genre to work with and leaves room for a lot of commentary. Also, anyone who knows me can tell you that I love robots and cyborgs–I will never miss an opportunity to write about them.
TT: Who is your favorite author or writer? What do you like about their work?
GS: Marissa Meyer! Her favorite series of mine is the Lunar Chronicles. As a sci-fi lover, I find a lot of sci-fi that repeats common tropes or is written in a sort of convoluted way. The Lunar Chronicles are a great introduction to sci-fi fantasy with wonderful characters and a story that really sucks you in. It covers a lot of typical sci-fi topics without being boring or hard to understand, and the new book covers are absolutely beautiful–I keep them on display in my room. I also enjoy the Renegades series, it's still sci-fi-ish but leans a bit more towards action-adventure superheroes. It's a super fun series and again–its covers are beautiful. I love pretty covers.
