"Tallow"
by: Rowan Potzler
curls around me like wisps of smoke,
quiet feet on my shoulders with
watchful eyes that scan everything nearby.
ears pricked for any sound, a
swivelling head to scout it all out
warning blood-trails down my skin.
sometimes it flickers away. no
warning when it goes, no warning
when it returns, nothing but a kiss.
sometimes it is relentless, rivulets of red
coating my shoulders as it’s haywire
overloading my senses and i sob.
forgiveness is slow on both ends
distrust as we wonder what is truly
perceived and what is false.
yet there’s no way to rip us apart
sinking into my skin as the wave falls
rising with it as it crashes.
