“George Floyd” (Set to the Tune of “Joe Hill”)
by: Shane Keyes
I dreamed I saw George Floyd last night,
alive as you and me.
Says I, “But George, you’re now long dead”,
“I never died”, says he.
“I never died”, says he.
“In Minneapolis, George” says I, him standing by my bed.
“They grabbed you for a trumped up charge”.
Says George, “But I ain’t dead.”
Says George, “But I ain’t dead.”
“Those cops,” says I, “they killed you George. They choked you where you
lie”. “Takes more than Force to kill a man”,
Says George, “I didn’t die”.
Says George, “I didn’t die”.
(Optional verse for non-BIPOC performers)
“They killed you for your skin,” says I, “I’ll never
understand.” “Of course,” says George, “but you can try.”
“Just take me by the hand.”
“Just take me by the hand.”
And standing there as big as life,
and smiling with his eyes.
Says George, “What they could never kill,
went on the organize”.
“Went on to organize”.
“From Louisville to Washington,
in every street and square!”
“Where people fight to save their lives,
Black names, they fill the air!”
“Just look, you’ll find me there”.
I dreamed I saw George Floyd last night,
alive as you and me.
Says I, “But George, you’re now long dead”,
“I never died”, says he.
“I never died”, says he.
“I never died”, says he.
